THE CORPORATION is a Canadian documentary film written by Joel Bakan, and directed by Mark Achbar and Jennifer Abbott. The documentary examines the modern-day corporation, considering its legal status as a class of person and evaluating its behavior towards society and the world at large as a psychiatrist might evaluate an ordinary person. This is explored through specific examples. Bakan wrote the book, The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, during the filming of the documentary.

This is a very smart critical piece of work along side “The story of stuff,” and David Korten’s “When corporations rule the world.” However the hardest part of it all is that we have to fix this because we are the “system,” unless you have been living on another planet. So, those of us on the inside of these behemoths that out of control, need to get really smart and strategic about how to change them – this can be and is being done by many unsung heroes. These stories, unlike the violent protests or scalding publicity, do not “bleed” enough so they do not “lead” in much of the public media.

I love the opening lines

Incredible film, all too true. I have woven resisting corporte control into my life: grow your own food, make your own food, make your own clothes, always buy used rather than new, don’t smoke or drink.

Lots of great info. Didn’t agree with all of the conclusions, but nice to see information presented in a reasoned and factually sourced way. I wish we were seeing more of this approach in the current atmosphere of sensationalism, polarisation and censorship of dissenting opinions!

As non-American, I can’t comprehend how corp’s like Monsanto are allowed to exist.
America is founded on the ideals of freedom and the pursuit of happiness, etc.
and corporations go against everything that the country was founded except Capitalsim

Good doc! Balanced enough for its bias (nice try by Mr. IBM!) and powerfully understated, something US documentary just cannot do.

As another point in this documentary’s favor, I just watched it as part of the standard curriculum of the business economy class of Lund University – in Southern Sweden very few of the next generation of businessmen will not be aware of, at the very least, the general gist of this documentary.

I really hope the corporations out there are paying attention, to the fact that using any practices that are considered unethical or inhumane in order for any form of gain, will kill any credibility band’s name carries. At that point who knows what these companies are willing to do to stay afloat considering what they did to get so high. It’s painful to see how bad our world has become primarily due to greed and power, but people need to know and it needs to be dealt with.

EVERYONE ON THE PLANET NEEDS TO WATCH THIS FILM AND LEARN THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE WORLD AROUND THEM.
I think the survival of all life on this planet (and I don’t just mean in terms of existing but actually living), not just a small bunch of rich elites running the corporate empires of the world, actually depends on it đŽ

very interesting documentary. i learned a lot. i think everyone already knows that corporations are pretty much terrible but this documentary really informed me of the depth of the situation.
i really hope Monsanto gets whats coming to them.

If you find this documentary interesting you should watch “The century of the self”. It’s available on youtube. It’s about the founders of consumerism, namely Edward Barnays, who implemented Freud’s notions of the subconscious for marketing products. It’s an accurate account of historical events that led to it and for the most part there are no conspiracy theories.

I am glad that there was a decent representation of the humanity of CEOs. I may not agree with their corporation practices, but sometimes we must realize that they are also caught in the undertow of the system. Yes, not all CEOs are cheery fellows willing to have tea with protestors at their doorstep, but I think it’s important to know that while the corporation is not a human with complex morals, the people within are… whether or not the seem moral human beings to our eyes.

Terrific documentary. Wish I had discovered it much earlier. Looks like we are going some things right in Canada with documentaries like this. Perhaps new tools like Buycott will be effective in helping ordinary people to put more pressure on big corporations. Thousands of us acting together CAN make our voices heard.

The modern day iteration of the corporate-government-military superstructure is truly diabolical.
That being said, it’s hard not to appreciate the genius, the ingenuity, and the sheer knowledge of human nature required in creating such a powerful and all-pervasive system.
Doesn’t make it right. But it is damn fine engineering…

People need to understand the way Corporate “Law” is pitched makes it compulsory for Corporations to MAXIMISE PROFITS at ALL COSTS, irrespective of Environmental and ethical catastrophes. Corporate law MUST be changed.

Great doc, was a good reminder to not take things at face value. I think people can still have faith in capitalism, but we have to be more conscious about everything around us and hold these things accountable for it to function in an ethical manner. That is what I am worrying about though because most people simply do not care at all or don’t know what to do (like me). I am just stuck here writing my two cents on YouTube hoping to just convince a few people to try to maintain a critical mind with me going forward.

A corporation is synonymous the a government. People have self-interest and when responsibility is taken away from the individual with coercion the organisation becomes a monster fueled by that self-interest. Wished the documentary would have had talked more about that.

We really need a ‘separation of state and corporation’ written into law.

People think money is the highest power. Actually the Law is. The highest authority is the law. The law has the power to fine and imprison the wrongdoers. It has the power to force someone else to pay money to someone else. Why not with these corporations? I advocate that we change the law making the directors of corporations personally responsible and liable for an environmental impact the company has.
Granted there will always be some pollution, make something unnatural, get something unnatural, but we need to limited it under the natural ability of Earth to heal. What we are doing at the moment is over using Earth not under using Earth. Limit it like the permits. Let corporations buy them from one another but the total pollution will not exceed a certain amount. And no p*ssying around with fines, imprison the bast*rds.
The result? Instant cooperation and environmental rebalancing. Of course this won’t happen though… Greed will sadly get the better of us…
